Camp NaNoWriMo: Wrap Up

Camp-NaNo-2014-Wrap-upWe cleaned up the cabin as much as we could. I think my parents are going to be charged for the damage done by the paint-filled balloons. The uprising incited by my cabin mate was quelled in the Great Hosing Escapade of 2014. She has calmed considerably since the counselors gave her that nice, white jacket. No one can find the machete. I think it was thrown into the lake. Anyway, the less said about that the better.  But I wouldn’t change a thing!

My grand total word count for this event is officially 3560. Somewhere in the ether there’s another 6440 words floating out there, just waiting for me to snatch them out of the air and put them on virtual paper. Like I said last week, when I realized the game was over for me, I intend to go rogue during NaNoWriMo this November and finish my script. And by finish, I mean reach 10,000 words- not the traditional 50,000 words that I would normally do.

Although, during a rare nap this past weekend, I had a great idea for a fun, beach-read. I’d love to use November to get started on that as well. But I’d hate to leave this script unfinished. When your time is stretched thin, it’s hard to choose which project to devote those precious free moments. But there’s no time limit on brilliance, dammit! Someday, I’ll write (and publish) all these damn books! But not today. Maybe not this year. Maybe not next year.

Congratulations to my winning cabin mates: Joan, Jeff & Becky!

And now, one last excerpt from my script that dangles, unfinished, in Google Docs.

EXT. A ROW OF RAMSHACKLE HOUSES RADIATING FROM THE CENTER OF CAMP- DAY

ASHA
Gasps in pain as she is examined by NAOMI TRUTH. Her right leg is still bleeding and lays useless in the dust.
One of her hands is cradled to her chest. There is blood leaking from her mouth thanks to missing teeth.
Something is clenched in her good hand.

TRIUMPH TRUTH
Pours some water into ASHA’S mouth.

ASHA
(Looking at NAOMI TRUTH)
JACOB?

NAOMI TRUTH
He was in perfect health when we left him.

ASHA
Nods and turns to TRIUMPH TRUTH

ASHA
Shouldn’t you be at the shelter?

TRIUMPH TRUTH
(exasperated)
Seriously?

ASHA
Laughs until it turns into coughing with more blood coming out of her mouth.

JACOB
Comes jogging around the corner. He sees ASHA and kneels beside her.

JACOB
I’m so sorry, baby.

ASHA
Yeah, one of those bastards got the drop on me.
But it didn’t end well for him.

JACOB
Looks at ASHA in confusion until she opens her hand and lets him see what she’s been clutching.

TRIUMPH TRUTH
Laughs out loud.

NAOMI TRUTH
Can’t contain a chuckle as well.

JACOB
Recoils in horror.

ASHA
In her hand, she clutches a bloody piece of a man’s anatomy.

JACOB
(regaining his composure)
He didn’t get to use it first, did he?

ASHA
Oh no. Not even close.

TRIUMPH TRUTH
Sombers at the thought of her friend ASHA being raped by one of those horrid DWELLERS.

NAOMI TRUTH
(to ASHA)
I’ve done all I can for you here.
(to JACOB)
Take her to the medical building.
Maybe MARY can do something for that break.

JACOB
Scoops ASHA up in his arms.

ASHA
Groans in pain, biting her bleeding lip to stay quiet.

JACOB
(to NAOMI)
All stragglers have been dealt with.
BELTER is building a fire in the center of town.

NAOMI TRUTH
Any other wounded?

JACOB
MARY has them.

NAOMI TRUTH
Nods to dismiss JACOB.

JACOB
Rushes off to make sure ASHA gets the care she needs.

ASHA
Drops the bloody body part she had been clutching in the dirt.

TRIUMPH TRUTH
Walks over to observe the body part lying in the dust.

NAOMI TRUTH
Stands as she puts away the last of her medical kit.

NAOMI TRUTH
No matter who has ‘em, those damn things
always get you in trouble.

TRIUMPH TRUTH
Nods sagely before bringing up one booted foot over the body part.

TRIUMPH TRUTH
Agreed.

TRIUMPH TRUTH
Slams her foot down on the body part until it’s just a bloody smear in the dirt.
She kicks more dirt over it and turns on her heel to join NAOMI TRUTH as they walk back toward the center of camp.

  1. Love this! Also love that I’m not the only one with several projects floating out there in the creative ether! Someday they’ll all be finished and published masterpieces, right? I get really down on myself about it at times, but your attitude just cheered me up. So thanks!

    • Thank you! I’m trying to take it easy on myself. Being a mom is freaking hard! I am disappointed that my revised goal of 10,000 words was still too much for me right now, but all I can do is keep on trying. Right now the priority is trying not to blink and miss this boy growing up so fast. That has to come first, before writing.
